What is disability income protection insurance?

Disability insurance is a crucial financial planning tool, especially for skilled professionals in a hands-on field like dentistry. The ADA Disability Income Protection Insurance Plan has been designed specifically for dentists offering coverage tailored to your profession, providing disability benefits during a disabling illness or injury.

ADA members enjoy exclusive cost-competitive rates that are among the lowest available in the market today.

Why do I need disability insurance?

With 1 in 4 dentists likely to experience a disabling condition1, disability income protection insurance provides a safety net of income replacement if you are unable to practice due to disabling illness or injury. If you experience a qualifying disability, benefit payments can help ease the burden of daily expenses, allowing you to focus on recovery.

What benefits are included?

True "own occupation" coverage
Receive full benefits if you’re an ADA member and total disability prevents you from practicing in your specialized dental field. Benefits continue up to age 672 even if you practice in other dental areas or switch professions.

Benefits payable to age 672
ADA members enjoy benefits, including full benefits payable to age 672, renewable coverage for active ADA members working full time up to age 75, and protection with benefits payable for 24 months if disabled between ages 65 and 75.

Benefits for mental and nervous conditions
Unlike other carriers, you can receive full long-term benefits for mental and nervous disorders, and for disabilities resulting from alcohol, drug, chemical or substance abuse without an upcharge or rider.3
calendar Icon Flexible waiting periods

Reduce your premium by extending your disability waiting period or minimize income loss with a shorter waiting period. Choose from 30, 60, 90 or 180 days.

hospital Icon Hospital Waiver

If, during the waiting period, you incur a medically necessary inpatient hospitalization that lasts a minimum of five consecutive days, your monthly benefit will be payable from the first day of confinement and any remaining days of the waiting period will be waived.

briefcase Icon Residual protection

If you return to work part-time following a total disability, you can still receive partial disability benefits. And with the Plan's Residual Plus option, you can qualify for residual benefits even sooner without ever being totally disabled.

lock Icon Coverage Lock-in

When you purchase ADA Disability Income Protection Insurance, the features you select are in place for the life of your coverage and can’t be taken away unless changes are mandated by changes in law or regulation. Read more about ADA insurance plans coverage lock-in.4

To be eligible to apply for the Disability Income Protection Insurance Plan, you must be actively working 20 hours per week and not in the active, full-time service of the military.

1Odds of disability are based on actual disability claims submitted by insured ADA members

22Benefits are payable to age 67, or if you become disabled between ages 65 – 75, benefits are payable for 24 months.

3The ADA Disability Income Protection Insurance Plan limits benefits to 12-months for substance abuse disabilities.

4Mandatory changes because of changing regulatory or legal requirements in the future may be made as required by law. Otherwise, coverage features may not be amended by Protective Life or the ADA once coverage commences as long as the participant does not allow coverage to lapse. Locked-in coverage features that subsequently lapse may not be available upon re-application for coverage. Premium rates are subject to change. The Coverage Lock-in feature does not apply to the Universal Life certificate.

More options

Members under age 50 may apply for:
Residual Plus: Income benefits without being totally disabled

With the Residual Plus, both total and residual disability days count toward your waiting period, even if non-consecutive. For example, with a 90-day waiting period, you can qualify for partial benefits if you are disabled for any 90 out of 180 days. This option will allow you to use days when you are partially disabled and showing a loss of income of at least 20% to fulfill your waiting period.

In addition to being renewable through age 64, benefits include:

  • Recovery benefit
If you fully recover and return to work full-time, you may continue to receive a monthly benefit for up to three months if you still suffer an income loss of 20% or more.
  • Liberal definition of loss of income
For the first 90 days of residual disability, lost income is based on a 20% drop in billables rather than receivables, allowing benefit payments to potentially begin sooner.
Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA): Protect your disability income benefit from inflation

This optional enhancement allows your benefits to automatically increase keeping pace with the cost of living.

In addition to being renewable through age 59, why select this option?

  • COLA is particularly beneficial for long-term disabilities that extend for several years or even decades.
  • Adjustments to the annual benefits are based on increases in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), with an annual maximum adjustment of 9%.
Future Increase Option: Get more coverage without a medical exam

Coverage needs may change over time. This optional coverage lets you increase your benefits as your income grows, without a medical exam (subject to financial underwriting and a $15,000 plan maximum).

In addition to being renewable through age 54, advantages of this option include:

  • Get an additional $1,000 in coverage every 12 months, up to a maximum increase of $5,000, without providing proof of good health.
